Horii, Mitsutoshi

Mitsutoshi HoriiShumei University (Japan) and Chaucer College Canterbury (UK)

I am affiliated to a Japanese university, but I live and work in the UK. I am interested in a critical study of ‘religion’ as a social category – focusing on how it has been historically constructed in a particular society (such as Japan), how it is demarcated from other (presumably ‘nonreligious’ or ‘secular’) categories, how its boundary has been contested, etc. In this light, I am currently studying religion category in Japan. In addition, I am trying to apply this approach to critically examine the notion of ‘religion’ in sociological discourse.
