Heidemarie Winkel, Dr. phil. habil., passed her studies in sociology and economics at the University of Trier.In 2010, she completed her Habilitation (professoral thesis) at the University of Potsdam. She will hold the Chair for Sociology at the University of Bielefeld from October 2015 onwards.

Heidemarie Winkel worked as a research fellow in sociological theory and gender sociology at the University of Trier (1993-1994), the Technical University of Berlin (1995-2001) and the University of Mainz (2001-2002); she continued as assistant professor at the University of Erfurt (2002-2005 & 2007-2009) and at the University of Potsdam (2009- 2011). Since 2011, she is an associated lecturer at the University of Potsdam. From 2005 to 2007 she completed a research project in the Middle East (funded by the German Research Foundation). She is a board member in two research sections of the German Sociological Association (Women’s and Gender Studies and Sociology of Religion); she is also the chair of the Research Network Sociology of Religion in the European Sociological Association (ESA) and member of the advisory board of GENDER. Zeitschrift für Geschlecht, Kultur und Gesellschaft. Currently, Heidemarie Winkel substitutes for the professorship of sociology at the University of Bielefeld and will hold this chair as a university professor starting in October 2015.
Her main research interests are Plural Modernities and Postcolonial Sociology, with a special interest in Arab societies, Qualitative Methods, Sociology of Knowledge, Culture & Intercultural Communication: Cultures of Understanding and Understanding Culture, Gender Sociology and last but not least Sociology of Religion
